This rare member of the Satureja species grows wild in Jamaica. The shrub is a member of the Lamiaceae family.

The previous botanical name Satureja Viminea is still accepted, but under the new classification, Jamaican mint tree is identified as Clinopodium vimineum.

 Although this species is native to Costa Rica, the Jamaican mint tree can be found in several warmer areas. However it is still considered a rare plant.

A few other names for the Jamaican mint tree are: Costa Rican mint, Jamaican mint bush, Serpentine savory, or Karma sutra mint.

Jamaican Mint Tree Description

The leaves are small, glossy, and lime green in color. The plant blooms tiny white flowers year round. Both the leaves and flowers give off  an intense minty scent.

The tree is a bushy shrub that can grow to between 6 and 8 feet tall. Pruning the plant will result in a more controlled looking shrub.

The stems take on a wood like appearance as the plant ages.

 Even though the entire plant is edible the older stems are not widely used in Jamaica.

For example the studies found that this species has potential to be used as alternative treatment of a number of conditions.
